Established in 1927 (Showa 2) as the main approach to Enryaku-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it passes through the historic stone-paved town of Sakamoto. The European-style cable cars “Midori” and “Fuku,” with their panoramic wide windows, are especially popular. Along the route, you’ll find two unique intermediate stations, seven bridges, and two tunnels, offering ever-expanding views of the majestic Lake Biwa as you ascend.
